Website visitor tracking is used by most website owners. It is useful for most website owners to too the amount or type of audience they are attracting to their site. This can be useful for advertising or marketing purposes.

In tracking your sites audience, you are taking data from your visitors. You must make it clear you are doing this on your site by outlining this in your cookies and privacy policy. Making visitors aware of this as they enter the site is also a good idea. This can be done with a policy notice bar or pop up.

Why should you track your visitors?

Website tracking can open your eyes to your sites past and current success. It allows you to see a wide array of information that can guide you to improve your site.

You can see break downs of what pages are doing well or not. From location to device type, you can see your visitors statistics. This may lead you to adjust your advertising or website content to target a different or wider audience.

How can you track your audience?

Google Analytics is the free tool used by most website owners. Although, it is most definitely not the only tool on the market. There area  number of more advanced trackers. However, most would highly recommended Google Analytics due to its compatibility with Google Search Console, Google My Business, and ability to track SEO on the worlds most used search engine.

Once you have signed up to GA. Your Google Analytics dashboard is broken down into 5 sections.

  • Realtime – Live statistics of your site in real time.
  • Audience – Information about the people that are visiting your site. From their general location to the devices they use.
  • Acquisition – Where your audience found and came to your site from. Social, direct, organic, or paid advertisement.
  • Behaviour – Page, post, and product data from total visits to time spent on each page.
  • Conversions – Tracking your sites purchase conversions.

You can view your analytics from one date to another. Whether that’s the last week, to the last 6 months. The ability to select a time period of your choice means its a great tool to see your websites timeline of use and success.

The comparison tool is also very useful if you want to compare one time period to another. This will put the data from each timeline alongside each other so you can clearly see the difference.
